2005 sees KOMATSU reach new heights
14/01/2005

The New Year sees a new addition to the Komatsu range of construction equipment with the launch of a series of “super-low boom profile” telescopic handlers. Available exclusively in the UK through Marubeni-Komatsu and its utility dealer network, the WH range features six different models, with lift capacities from 3.5 to 4.5 tonnes and maximum lift heights from 9 to 16.1 metres. The tele-handlers are designed to meet the needs of both construction and material handling companies and are used primarily for handling palletised loads, placing roof timbers and gutters, and general front shovel work.

The most significant feature of these new machines is their “super-low boom profile” which provides excellent static and dynamic stability. The machines can be fitted with frame leveling, which allows the chassis to be level even when working on uneven ground, and true parallel lift ensures the safe placement of materials even at full height. Stability is further enhanced by the ±10 degree oscillating front axle. All models can be supplied with front stabilisers, which can be independently controlled, and affords the machines even greater stability.

All the machines in the range have very tight turning circles, which ensures maximum manoeuvrability, even on restricted sites. The steering mode system allows the machines to be placed in to three different modes: four-wheel steer - highly useful in narrow spaces, two-wheel steer for road travel, and crab steer which enables the machine to escape away from tight obstacles such as walls. All models are fitted as standard with a 5 forward and 3 reverse gear Power Shift transmission.

These new machines have the highest drawbar pull and greatest breakout force in their class. Their new-generation, Stage 2, 4.5 litre engine is available in two versions: an 80.5 HP aspirated, and a 99.2 HP turbo. The state-of-the-art hydraulic system features a Closed Load Sensing System (CLSS), as fitted to all Komatsu machines, which when coupled with the variable flow displacement pump and servo controls allows simultaneous movements of all functions, independent of rpm, and low fuel consumption.

Special attention has also been paid to the needs of the operator. The cab is easy to access with an internal width that makes it the widest in its class. The “super-low boom profile” provides amazing all-round visibility even when carrying loads. All the machines are fitted with suspension seats, armrests and tiltable steering columns as standard. Low noise levels coupled with PPC joystick controls creates a cab environment that is to be admired. Safety is a big consideration and all machines have an audible and visual overload warning system installed inside the cab. A unique safety system ensures that when traveling only mode is selected the machine remains only in two-wheel steer and all the work equipment is isolated.

The telehandlers will be on show on the Marubeni-Komatsu stand (Stand No 401, Avenue E) at the SED 2005 Exhibition (17-19 May, Fen Farm, Milton Keynes), where visitors will be able to see them put through their paces in the Komatsu demonstration area.
